
N.O. City Council Approves Pedicabs Proposal(WRNO) -- The New Orleans City Council has unanimously approved a proposal to allow pedicabs to operate on the streets of the city. The vote Thursday was 7-0. Opponents have contended that three-wheelers would cut into the business of cabs and carriages, but supporters say the clientele would be completely different. Under a proposal introduced by councilmember Kristen Palmer, 65 permits could be issued and an individual operator would be permitted to have no more than 15. However, only 45 permits would be issued in the first year or two. The ordinance would require each vehicle to feature a unibody frame construction and be equipped with headlights, flashing taillights and hydraulic, mechanical disc or drum brakes.
