Saving our youth one trumpet at a time

Glen David Andrews for Trumpets NOT Guns | New Orleans Events | InthekNOwla.com
2012 hasn’t been so easy for New Orleans. Yes, the beginning of the year brought us some great events, but we’re also dealing with the same old sh*t…violence and crime. Like the rest of the city, we have the same questions: “When is enough enough? What can I do to help change this culture of violence in New Orleans?”

Many will say that it’s too late to save New Orleans. Or they might even leave because they “can’t take it anymore.” For those people, we invite you to keep those opinions to yourself. If you’re not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem…those who complain, but do nothing; those who move away because it’s easier; those who turn a blind eye thinking it will all work itself out until the violence arrives at their doorstep.

Well, no matter where you live, the violence has already arrived…and unless we do something about it, it will remain and continue to ruin this city.

Native New Orleanians Lisa and John Grillot, founders of local cause Trumpets NOT Guns, are doing their part in stopping the violence in our city.

Changing the way kids “eat, learn, and live” at the Edible Schoolyard New Orleans

Edible Schoolyard New Orleans | New Orleans Causes | InthekNOwla.com
(InthekNOwla) -- NEW ORLEANS | If you went to school in Orleans parish, then we’re sure you remember lunchtime. The rectangle-shaped sausage pizza, hamburgers and “Cajun” fries, mashed potatoes and perfectly square chicken nuggets, yellow rice and baked chicken, and something that kind of resembles the McRib from McDonald's. Mix in the regulatory fruit cocktail, spinach (if the grass had recently been cut), bread, and white milk (though it was like finding a $20 bill when a rare chocolate milk was spotted).

And on those many days when we didn’t want cafeteria food, there were the vending machines with all kinds of goodies to eat and drink…Doritos, vanilla crème cookies, Sprite, and fruit punch…all the sugar and salt you could want. Needless to say, lunchtime wasn’t exactly the healthiest. In all honesty, our eating habits in general weren’t (and still aren’t) all that healthy.

Being a Son of a Saint

Written by InthekNOwla.com    Saturday, June 18, 2011 06:00 AM    PDF Print E-mail

Bivian “Sonny” Lee, III of Son of a Saint Sports Foundation

(InthekNOwla) -- NEW ORLEANS | To the men and boys of New Orleans: When you think about your father, what are some of your best memories? Maybe it’s him showing you how to shave or change a tire for the first time. Or taking you to a Saints game in the Superdome. Or maybe the long (or small) talks you and him had about women, being a man, the world in general.

Unfortunately, there are many young men in New Orleans who don’t have a relationship with their fathers. No one to guide them through this game of life. No one to provide them with support and encouragement. No one to show them the power they hold and how to harness it to be successful. Instead, there's just a boy maneuvering on his own, making mistakes, hoping that everything works out in the end and not knowing what to do when it doesn’t.
