Entrepreneur Spotlight: Chonchol Gupta & Xavier Cabo of Rebirth Financial

Entrepreneur Spotlight: Rebirth Financial

(InthekNOwla) -- NEW ORLEANS | Could you imagine New Orleans without her small businesses? Just a vast land of corporations and big businesses with no ties to or knowledge of the people or culture. Luckily, however, New Orleans is an oasis for small businesses. Whether you’re making healthy beverages like Renee Brown of Bayou Brew Wellness Tea, writing love notes to the city like Robert Fogarty of Dear New Orleans, or creating your own fashion line like Ayo Scott of NOYO Designs, us New Orleanians love to have things that are all our own.

Unfortunately, it’s not always so easy to start that small business. Like everything else, you need money (and a lot of it)...money for an office, employees, supplies, marketing, advertisements, etc. And most of us aren’t just sitting on a lump of cash to use and instead have to "figure out" how to get that money.

Entrepreneur Spotlight: New Orleans Lager & Ale (NOLA) Brewing Company

Written by InthekNOwla.com    Thursday, May 05, 2011 02:47 PM    PDF Print E-mail

(InthekNOwla) -- NEW ORLEANS | Barley, music, hops, fun, yeast, friends…anybody know what that makes? If you guessed beer, then you’re almost right. But, if you guessed New Orleans beer, then you definitely know your beer and your city!

New Orleans Lager & Ale Brewing Company, or NOLA Brewing as it’s more affectionately known, combines the best of both worlds…our wonderful city of New Orleans and beer to drink in it. Kirk Coco, president of NOLA Brewing, put it so eloquently: “In a New Orleans atmosphere, you’re either gonna have a cocktail or a beer in your hand. That’s just how we do it down here. When you think about hanging out with your friends, you’re always gonna have some beers, and you’re gonna have fun doing it.” And what better way to have your beer than to have local beer.

Not that long ago, however, New Orleans had its own breweries, such as Jax Brewery and Dixie Brewing Company, both of which have since closed down or are being brewed elsewhere. Kirk said, “I watched Jax and Dixie close down and that always hurt me. I thought to myself that if I ever had the chance to open a company and make something, I would do it. So, I started thinking about what I could do. During that time, I was drinking Dixie a lot, trying to support the local brewery. One night, I was staring at the bottle and doing a lot of thinking because after a few beers, you get smarter!
I’m looking at the bottle and it says Made in Wisconsin, but on the front of the bottle, it says Dixie, New Orleans. I was like, ‘Oh my God! I’ve been drinking this beer for 6 months trying to support our locals and it’s not even made here!’ I couldn’t believe that nobody ran a brewery in this city, so I put that on my list of things that somebody needs to be doing here.”
