Cupcakes & Co. | New Orleans Dessert Shops | InthekNOwla.com
(InthekNOwla) -- NEW ORLEANS | There’s always a sense of comfort when there’s a doctor in the house. And it’s even more comforting when that doctor is in a house of cupcakes, or cupcakery as it’s more affectionately known.

Just like any doctor knows his patients, Dr. Kyshun Webster knows and understands his cupcakes. There’s Red Velvet and Sweet Louisiana Strawberry, Banana Foster and Creole Cream Cheese, normal sized ones and mini sized ones, some in martini glasses and others in typical cupcake fashion. Yes InthekNOwlians, Cupcakes & Co., New Orleans’ newest and cutest cupcakery, has all those goodies…and more.

A parade of smoothies, snowballs & lemonade in Mid City

Written by InthekNOwla.com    Thursday, July 21, 2011 05:11 AM    PDF Print E-mail
Lemonade Parade on Carrollton
(InthekNOwla) -- NEW ORLEANS | This year’s Mardi Gras saw plenty sad faces on the Friday before the big day. It had been raining all day and looked as if Saturday evening was gonna be rained out too, which meant that the only parade to still go through Mid City, Endymion, would not be able to roll. Well, Endymion was indeed canceled (even though it barely rained on Saturday) and Mid City was left all by her lonesome for Mardi Gras 2011.

Gentilly’s newest gem, The Munch Factory

Written by InthekNOwla.com    Tuesday, May 24, 2011 03:02 AM    PDF Print E-mail

(InthekNOwla) -- NEW ORLEANS | How many times do you say (or hear), “Before Katrina, I used to …” That many times, huh? Yeah, before Katrina, we used to eat at Vasquez on Franklin Ave. and shop at Ferrara’s on Elysian Fields and go to St. Raphael Church on Filmore. But guess what, it’s not “before Katrina” anymore, so let’s enjoy what we got right now! (Ok, we’re done.)

So, I bet you’re thinking, “What we got right now, InthekNOwla?” Well, we’re so glad you asked. The next time you’re in the Gentilly area and you're having a craving for some good food, you have got to stop at The Munch Factory, a great new, family-owned restaurant.

The Munch Factory is exactly as the name sounds…a place (factory) where things (food) are being created and built for you to use (munch). And the master creators in this factory are Chef Jordan Ruiz and his wife, Alexis Pearson Ruiz (and sometimes their 2 year-old son, Dominic, who loves to help Mom and Dad).

“Dish on Hayne” in New Orleans East

Written by InthekNOwla.com    Monday, April 25, 2011 11:36 AM    PDF Print E-mail
Dish on Hayne in New Orleans East | New Orleans Restaurants | InthekNOwla.com
(InthekNOwla) -- NEW ORLEANS | As born and bred Gentilly-ians, New Orleans East wasn’t nothing but a hop, skip, and a jump away for us. Who doesn’t remember the days of shopping at The Plaza, going to the movies at Eastlake, chillin’ with friends and family in Lake Forest Estates, Littlewoods, and Chimney Woods, or just joy ridin’ on Downman, Bullard, Crowder, or Morrison…those were the days.

Since Katrina, many have given up on the East, thinking that no person or business would dare come back. But those people are wrong, so so so wrong. The East is coming back and InthekNOwla is thrilled to showcase one of those businesses that has made the East its home, family owned restaurant Dish on Hayne.

Beaucoup Nola Juice, a different kind of snowball stand

Written by InthekNOwla.com    Tuesday, March 09, 2010 12:00 AM    PDF Print E-mail

Beacoup NOLA Juice | New Orleans Restaurants | InthekNOwla.com
(InthekNOwla) -- NEW ORLEANS | We definitely have our fair share of snowball stands in New Orleans: Pandora's, Plum St., Hansen's, and the one by Brother Martin High School on Elysian Fields (though the name has completely escaped us :). And our loyalty towards one of them can run very thick!

We stopped by a different kind of snowball stand the other day called Beaucoup Nola Juice. Beaucoup Nola Juice is not your typical snowball stand. Instead, it's a mixture of smoothies, juices, and snowballs using fresh and local ingredients. Can you imagine a strawberry snowball with fresh strawberry juice made from Ponchatoula strawberries? Well, it's a reality at Beaucoup Nola Juice.

Beaucoup Nola Juice is located Uptown on Freret St., a bustling neighborhood that is becoming more and more vibrant everyday. Inside, you'll find art work to look at and buy, books to read, and certain costumes to peruse. One of us had "The Tipitina" (also known as "The Local") smoothie - Ponchatoula strawberries, farmer's market peaches, honey, banana, and soy milk. And lemme tell you, Smoothie King ain't got nothin' on this smoothie! Light, fresh, healthy, and local! And we also tried the fresh Guanabana juice. Guanabana is a prickly, green, strange looking fruit and is native to Central and South America and the Caribbean. And the juice was so good and fresh! The juice is a little thicker than what you would expect and you can mix it with other fresh juices to cut down on the thickness. But for us, it was just perfect! It felt like we should be stepping outside onto a white sand, blue water beach in the Caribbean!

Of course, there are tons of other to try between the smoothies, juices, and snowballs. You can get watermelon, orange, passion fruit, and so on! So the next time you're feeling like you're about to melt in this New Orleans heat and humidity, check out Beaucoup Nola Juice for a sweet, healthy, local treat!

Deanie's Seafood, a New Orleans staple

Written by InthekNOwla.com    Tuesday, March 09, 2010 12:00 AM    PDF Print E-mail

Deanie's Seafood | Seafood | InthekNOwla.com | New Orleans, Louisiana
(InthekNOwla) -- NEW ORLEANS | For many New Orleanians, Deanie's Seafood is a shrine for everything seafood: shrimp, crabs, oysters, fish, crawfish, fried, boiled, stuffed, live, and whatever else you can think of. At InthekNOwla, we have been going to Deanie's on Fridays since before we can remember. And even though EVERY time we would go, there would be an incredibly long line, it was never an issue to wait as long as needed in order to get our beloved seafood.

While for the most part, we always went to the restaurant in Bucktown, this last time around, we decided to live it and head to the one Downtown instead. The biggest difference is just the atmosphere. Bucktown has a much more homier, mom-and-pop feel, while Downtown is a little bit fancier and touristy. But don't get it twisted, the food is the same at both places: big plates full of delicious seafood.

Now, everyone knows you get to feast on the boiled red potatoes first. And usually, we're so greedy, we don't even have time to put any butter on them! When it was time to order, of course we got the seafood platter which is MORE than enough for two people. Fried shrimp, catfish, those damn mouth-watering soft-shell crabs, stuffed shrimp, crawfish dressing balls, and the lowly french fries...you don't need to eat for like two days after having this! Of course, Deanie's is also known for its outstanding Barbeque Shrimp and Seafood Gumbo...but we didn't want our stomachs to bust open in the restaurant, so we'll save these for the next trip.

So when you're looking for some great seafood, head on down to a New Orleans staple, Deanie's Seafood!
